recent purchase...reckon if I was going to source reverb it would have to be a full reverb tank and not a tiny pedal emulating springs..
took a lot of reading up before going ahead and purchasing the beast that will come in from germany, which is handy. will use a 230/110 Volt converter.
Together using the Silver Jubilee Marshall head I'm expecting some great headroom without having to bother with a fender amp. This tank gets the thumbs up over the fender ri and more.

I actually never knew that Marshall actually built their own reverberation tank between the 60s-70s. makes the Guyatone dna look fairly obvious....costs wise your looking at five times the costs of a Guyatone...
Been waiting an age for the body to arrive and things got rather frustrating when as opposed to 5 days it took 3 weeks to arrive..
...but it did. These bodies are not cheap. And with a weight of 2.15 lbs and the finish I can understand why. Coupled with a purchase I made back in 2009, a Warmoth modern C pro series with AAA Birdseye maple and Brazilian rosewood fret board , things were heating up. Now, some people scribble that these necks rob tone. An interesting point indeed and one to keep in mind. With a body weight of 2.15 the resonance is quite incredible.
I had enough lying around to stick it together just to get a version 1. The fact that the fullertons arrived at the same time had me deciding to try them out. Once I had the parts on the table I decided to go for another pick guard, which i also bought a while back. I had plans on using a different bridge with brass saddles, brass claw and silent springs, so that's happening possibly....meantime, here are some pics of the initial set up. the pickups are amazing. the hype is right!
so in the dark wee hours she came together. As I wrote, a few minor changes, color tones on knobs and pickup covers , bridge...maybe with brass saddles to go with brass nut and then as mentioned a brass claw and silent springs. Although, the sound is already there..."Gonzo"http://www.blogger.com/profile/14415051688717734705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5201745222459469000.post-66638103080629466492017-01-10T21:52:00.001+01:002017-01-10T21:52:27.114+01:00Lets see what all the fuss is about...So, winter is the time to get stuck into projects and the past week has thrown up a few kick-starters.
The 5110 Marshall is getting an upgrade, with an Eminence texas heat speaker as well as some internals replaced; many years ago I read about a pedal made by Blackstone in the states. Came across the desk as it was apparently Billy Gibbons fav pedal. As the price was quite high I left it at that, but recently, in fact only a few days back, one came up on the UK flea bay and that saves in import taxes and costs. So that's on the way as well. So a few pots, stereo jacks and some fixing up on some of the guitars that needed a service, has had me busy.
With the Blue Burst body hopefully on the way...still..( was meant to be here on the 28th dec but some shady Italian people claim the swedish customs refused it entry..), I've been considering what to fit as pickups. I have a few choices if I want to cannibalise, and I've also been looking at just about set available, from hot noiseless Jeff beck to Bare knuckle sets. Just as the wallet was stopping smouldering from the purchases, a set of original red bobbin Fullertons from 82 came up on a more local website. sets of 82's usually hit the 1000 plus dollar mark. At the asking price I had to buy them, otherwise I'd kick myself. So things are gonna get busy!

Cut a long story short, a while back i picked up an amazing modern C Warmoth pro series neck. Birdseye maple with a rosewood slab, and a brass nut fitted (Fender Malmsteen part number) and yet this neck had never really had a body that really fitted the neck.

Not sure why, but it suddenly dawned on me that maybe the best move would be to find a warmth body. And so the looking began on the bay. Didn't take long before I found exactly what I thought would do the trick....with the reasoning being the fact that this body was under 3 Lbs swamp ash and looked different enough to start actually building a project that would be different to the rest of my others.

Liking the look of this blue burst and especially the weight, with a rear and sides that are black.

so, time to take apart another guitar that I wasn't 100% happy with which sources pretty much everything required: Warmoth pro series neck, hardware...and pretty much everything except pickups.

so then it would be down to the usual questions...pickguard...which one...

I have a 77 original black pick guard if required...but I went for a white solid three ply custom pick guard which i found on the bay. Single ply but same thickness as a three ply pick guard.

so as usual we shall see how that pans out as both black and white do the job on a blue burst...

so, we shall see once everything is setup on the work bench. However, this photograph that I found out there seems to be the way I will go...

next week should see the start of parts dropping through the door, although knowing the post at xmas it's probably gonna go together in 2017...

liking the set up between black, burst and ash piping..this isn't the same body as mine due to pickup cavities, but same burst and setup..
This came up a week ago on the bay. export model with Japanese pick guard and pickups. Clean export model with a neck date from august 82. Did some research and apparently the dubious models came out in october, and later. Anything pre-october is meant to be high build. Apparently the first run and second run are the same guitar but with different decals on the neck, which of course means the collectors pay more for the first run.

I have a stack of parts currently on the kitchen floor. All parts from a ZXR750R/K project that I started after my own original R/K was stolen for the second time.....so I started buying parts...

It's about time I started bolting things together...this looks awesome...
Once you drive it day to day, you'll notice just how hot the engines get quickly.
Apparently this is down to a poor design of the original technical specs of the water pumps. Apparently the housing units and the impellers had too large a gap, which meant at low revs the pressure wouldn't be great enough to get the juice flowing at the required flow.

So, MV did an upgrade impeller. Depending on what you read, some say it works, other say it doesn't.
So, you either spend on that or replace it with a DC water pump that will increase flow by 46%.

No brainer..
Apparently they collapse. Not good. My own has had a bearing change, but after 35,000km MV state you have to change the hub the lifecycle is over at that point.

So , looking around it'll probably be one of these. dear, yes. But whats the value of a life?
So, the MV. Currently she's looking at hitting the 35,000km on the tach and even though I got a whole bunch of receipts to show how much has gone into the bike, there are a few things that require work.

To start with I've purchased new break pads, new front bearings. I looked at the front stand I had for the Ducati and realised it wouldn't do the job for the MV.

Suddenly the front stand pictured came up on the local selling site. a shop was selling out new MV parts as they would stop being a distributor. so 50% on all genuine MV parts. Should make everything easier.

At the same time I found another discounted item, a genuine MV Brutale bike cover. Also a discount item and by all accounts the bikes gonna look awesome once she goes under wraps for the winter.

So...the Ducati 748 stolen and recovered...except this time it never came back to me as the insurance company kept her as she had so much broken plastic...sorry t see her go...as always

So I was in the market for another bike and for a while I was looking at a KTM. Then this MV came up. never even knew this bike existed...the more I looked, the more I got interested...just looking at the spec sheet was just silly...
so, off I went on a train with a bike helmet, up north for 6 hours to buy the beast and drive back...as usual, not really thinking...another Italian...wet weather? usual issues with electrics...who cares, just looking at the design and spec sheet..I mean to say, even the initial engine design was by Ferrari and based on 4 cylinders of their worst F1 car of 92....but whatever, it's what I wanted and knew i would need to get the hands dirty...and I wasn't wrong.

usual issues ...join a forum, find out the list of what goes wrong....after a few rain storms the relay electrical box fries...it kills the battery which is already long past it's sale date...so:
new battery- check
new electrical box - check

oh, but wait, this unit I bought does everything except the front headlight...It's then I read that "two" boxes were built and to ensure one orders the correct box for the 750.....ffs...
I find the correct box at an exceptional price and order. I get a message from the company based in germany that they are now on holiday and return in two weeks... I also get a message that MV are going through reconstruction with AMG and that parts are taking longer to get..ffs...4 weeks without a bike in the summer months...

So I drive with the box and no headlight. hashtag limitations...

Currently on the kitchen table are a set of koyo front wheel bearings as there seems to be a noise coming from the front wheel that sounds a bit strange...a fuel filter and o-ring and soon I'll expect some issues with the rear hub as apparently they also get a bit iffy after the mileage the bike has.

so, was it worth it? Oh yes. this ranks as one of the most enjoyable bikes I've ever owned. It's power band is more akin to a two stroke than a four stroke and it just feels right. Once the CAT was dumped and a mid-pipe fitted, it seemed to breath better and with the noise induction sounding like a 60's formula one car, you just want to keep riding the beast!

¨the next step up is the 910s, but I'd sacrifice the torque for the free revving 750 smaller engine.

woke up to the news that lemmy of Motorhead passed away.

I first saw and met Motorhead back in 1982 on the Iron Fist tour. back then it was Lemmy, Fast Eddie and Phil on the drums. With the drummer passing away two weeks ago , they seem to be heading off together. Obviously the original line-up broke up after the iron Fist tour and to be honest I stopped listening after that.
Lemmy leaves a legacy and quite rightly so."Gonzo"http://www.blogger.com/profile/14415051688717734705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5201745222459469000.post-25078770519143771652015-12-23T11:21:00.004+01:002015-12-23T11:21:51.960+01:00a couple of pedals for xmas.....BOSS DD-2 blue label and Velvet MinotaurI have to say I'm not a huge fan of pedals. I'm not that far advanced perhaps...it's enough to plug into the amp...
..however, I do like the odd pedal and currently looped into the jubilee is an analog CE-2, a TE looper and a Korg guitar tuner. Front of amp is a Jam wahwah. I was really keen on finding a delay that I knew I would be happy with, so the other day a Boss DD-2 came up at the right price as it was scratched and didn't have it's box and original receipt...(??) so that will be added into the loop with the CE-2.

So, for some bizarre and reason that cannot be explained...I came across the price of the Klon Centaur. Now, I think pretty much everybody knows or has listened to the Klon. It's the mutha of all tone pedals which is basically why they now command such high prices on the bay. the same price as a second hand car...

..and just like the Dumble amps that preceeded...Bill Finnagan also covered his secrets with black goo. This of course will never stop the hardcore pedalisters and right enough, the klon centaur schematic is now readily available...or is it? Soon enough you get linked up to the Illuminati and you read about diodes that are unavailable as a giant gold dragon has them in a hill somewhere and nobody can find that sound until the hobbits and dwarfs break into the mountain and steal some...

..then, you start listening to the comparison clips on youtube...never easy when listening through the mac pro...however, you soon realise that some of the pedals are really really close to the original..
Some claim to be EXACT copies in every single way with regards outputs and all the rest...but hold on..what about the hobbits and dwarfs....believe it or not, the more you read the forums the more the arguments are laid down about russian de/9 diodes and resistors aren't the same as lord of the rings diodes and bla bla...so...anyway, after listening and reading and reading and listening..It came down to basically two options that I felt were in the right price bracket and by all accounts had enough of the klone of the klon to entice me to bring one home...
...it was either gonna be the Arc Klone V2 or the Velvet Minotaur. The price was almost the same...one had free shipping and one didn't...one was in europe so no import tax...the other wasn't..
so..on the way from Greece is the Velvet Minotaur:
But, I have a silver jubilee head and I wanted to run it through a practice 1x12 cabinet. So I decided to use the combo as the foundations as a cabinet and purchased the required fitting gear from Earcandy.

Part one is complete. However, I'm not convinced by the Celestion G12M 70 4ohm speaker, so the hunt is on for a replacement. I may just remove a speaker out of the 2x12 Jube cabinet.

Having looked around the net there are a lot of decent speaker manufacturers out there. One company that has impressed is Scumback. I'll update if and when I decide what is gonna replace the G12M 70.

Well the double neck arrived eventually.
I say that as it only took a day from japan, but 7 days at the customs due to a fuck up..

So I was happy to finally go and pick it up. And I have to say I'm more than happy with what was in the box!

I'm scoured the net to see if there are any other double necks with the same features but nothing has come up. As you can see, there are a few deviations to the norm. Apparently guitars were made at the same place Greco and Ibanez were made. That actually explains a few things.
The pickups are Ibanez super 70's. covered and uncovered. what an impressive humbucker! I did some reading about them and apparently they are unpotted and use alnico 8 for the magnets.
The positional markers on both necks are also a mystery. look class I reckon, and would rather have them like this than the std. Gibson copy. Bit more JM in these..
I haven't been able to find one other Mij double neck with the same fenderesque pickup switches in the middle scratch plate. I wonder if this was also a one-off?
Then you have the tails that are longer down the body. Apparently Jimmy page ordered his one-off EDS with this as one got better sustain. Once again, whoever ordered this back in the day knew what he/she wanted. According to the advert the necks are maple and the body Mahogany.
Finally, you have 18 Greco top end metal tulip tuners at the end of necks. quality written all over them, also high end parts and once again I can't find the same type when scouring the net.

So I reckon I found a real pearl of a double neck. I'd love to know who ordered it initially.
sounds fantastic and plays really easy. The setup is spot on.

"Gonzo"http://www.blogger.com/profile/14415051688717734705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5201745222459469000.post-30175050312809938702015-11-19T17:10:00.000+01:002015-11-19T23:35:18.415+01:00Greco double neckhad no intentions to buy a Greco double neck lawsuit copy, but this caught my eye on the bay and I started checking it out at it's source.
As already mentioned, I don't like the idea of getting a guitar that is exactly the same as Jimmy page, or beck or any of those gurus. they could basically plug into a potato chip and make anything sound good.
I liked the fact that the pattern markers weren't the norm. I also like the separate switches for the pickups at the rear. reading the jap site gave more info. As per the norm, this was a special order from around 77. What makes it rather rarer is the fact that most necks were bolt-ons when this was made, but this came as a set-neck. So, I think this special order was worth the money the japanese site was asking, around half of the cost on ebay....

Having looked around at Double-necks, I noticed the biggest differences with most are where the tail is in relation to the rest of the body. Jimmy Pages Gibson has the tail further down the body which apparently gives the guitar more sustain than the versions where the tails sit further up.

So once again somebody tried to steal the Duc. getting rather tiresome as they epic fail and leave me to pick up the parts.. this time a screwed up ignition lock and front brake disc.
The bike was put in to fix the front fork oil seal which had it fail the MOT and now that's done through a shop at silly money, the bike hasn't been the same since..

So, I'm now changed the regulator/rectifier and added a new battery to the list. I thought that would fix the issue of misfiring when warm, or the fact that I would charge the old battery it would be flat in as many seconds as it takes to scribble this...

I've checked everything with a volt meter and apparently it was charging on tickover and at around 2500 rpm...so you would have thought that was okay..but no. the battery simply died. So I bought a new battery...on the way to work the usual shit started with misfiring and general fucking around...

looking around there are several reasons for this, which just makes me more inclined to sell the bike. Don't have time for this kind of shit. temp sensors, fuel filters embedded in the petrol tank that need changed as they can draw a charge due to the fuel injector system, and bla bla Italian fucking shite electrics.. They obviously put more money into the design than the electrics that have a design fault from the start with thin wires from the generator burning out and bla bla...And yes, mine is a three phase system which is meant to be the improved version...god help any two phase persons..

I ride bikes. A lot of "bike" riders leave them in the garage and wear the leather jacket to the bar explaining how much fun their 40 minutes a week is so awesome...well bollox, rain wind or shine I need my two wheels to work!

rant over!
Obviously to a point as sticking in pre-amps and equalizers and batteries requires more effort...

Anyway, having looked around for a body , things got a bit expensive if I was gonna go new with a relic scheme. So when this solid ash body came up I thought I'd just build a similar guitar., I was fortunate enough to find two 80s Seymour Duncan vintage hot stacks and I already had an 80s HS3 Dimarzio which balances up the neck pickup.
With a floyd sitting topside without a route as done with all the later strat bodies, the string height is slightly higher, but that seems to add to the solid ash sustain and the hot stacks that seem to pick up everything including radio one... harmonics across the board and when you add in any distortion things gets really heavy without getting muddy.

Most of the plastic is from the 80s and works well with the salmon gloss (see-thru 2 grain) colour.

The neck is pretty fat which also assists a huge sound.

The wiring is setup with tone on the bridge pup. Interesting when you use 2 position between the two hot stacks. Currently wearing 10's.

Really enjoying the ride!

Took some months of waiting, and finally I've managed to collect some 80s original Seymour Duncan hot stacks. So here they are. As used by Zappa, one in the bridge and one in the middle position. It's either gonna be a Dimarzio HS-3 or a Malmsteen HS-4 in the neck.

Due to the budgets involved, I'll wait and see what I do with the 80's solid ash I picked up. salmon gloss it's pretty nice as it is and I'm not sure if it's worth going through the hassle of stripping it and getting a respray. We shall see. it's a nice weight and together with the 80s floyd, will do the job nicely.

right then, just need to wait until the second pup arrives and then the soldering iron comes out..
Barr the Öhlins forks and the dry clutch, my project is basically the same. Oh, and the works YEC swing-arm. Question is if I should source a YZF swingarm or just keep the standard OW01 arm..

The YEC frame strengtheners on the side of the frame are the same. The airbox looks the same...mine is a Harris item..And of course the radiator is slightly different, mine is a YEC item from a YZF by the mounts on it..

The Ow01 project was shelved for a few reasons. Due to an issue with the works head and setup I had to take out the fully tuned owl engine and stick in the extra engine I got with the bike which is a YZF750 engine. To solve the issue I needed another OW01 cylinder head which was just purchased around 1 minute ago. The works cams will slot right in and the issues I had should be sorted.

So it's head down to get the project on the race engine finished. Otherwise the rest of the bike is pretty much ready.
Lovely guitar , but one I stop using so much. Not sure why, but just wasn't that keen on the floyd.
So, a mate said the best guitar he'd ever played for tone was the hard tail version of the wolfgang.

So been looking for one for a while and one finally came up on the bay.
